These Are the 7 Newest Billion-Dollar Startups

These Are the 7 Newest Billion-Dollar Startups Unicorns are a thing of fairy tales …except in the high-stakes world of Silicon Valley startups. In 2019, seven different U.S. startups have already become so-called “unicorns,” the term for a company whose valuation has soared past $1 billion, generally due to the success of its latest funding round. The name was initially coined in 2013 because of how rare it was for startups to be valued at $1 billion â€" 39 companies fit the description at the time. Fast forward five years and that’s no longer the case: In 2018 alone, 54 U.S. companies joined the club, according to a running list from CB Insights, a financing and investment database from startup directory platform Crunchbase. It’s a combination of startups staying private longer (see: Uber) and more money being available in the market. The class of 2019 has already raised more than $2 billion, according to data pulled from Crunchbase. More money means more job openings, of course, and a startup provides plenty of opportunity for employee growth â€" and maybe even a slice of the pie, if and when the company goes public. These companies are mostly looking for engineers or data scientists, since every company crossing that billion-dollar-line relies on technology in some way. And almost all are also looking for sales representatives and product managers to help them expand to attract more investors and cross that next milestone. But there are jobs in other fields too, depending on the company’s specific needs. Here’s a snapshot of 7 of the hottest startups right now â€" and the jobs they’re hiring for. Collibra During the era of big data and privacy concerns, startup Collibra and its “data governance technology” is coming out on top. The platform helps companies understand what data they have to allow them to ensure that they’re within the parameters of the law when it comes to gathering and using consumer data such as email addresses or social security numbers. The company was founded in 2008, but some pretty significant data privacy-related events from the last year â€" e.g. Facebook’s privacy scandals and the European Union’s stricter data protection regulations â€" helped Collibra become one of the first unicorns of 2019. It took 11 years for it to raise $134 million, and only the last year to raise $100 million more, putting its valuation at $1 billion as of January 2019. The New York-based company is hiring for positions in New York City, Brussels, London, Paris, and other cities in Europe, Australia, and the U.S. It’s currently in need of various engineers, product managers, accountants, customer service representatives, marketing professionals and sales representatives. Calm Calm, a startup aimed at helping people ease their minds through meditation, hit a milestone in February when it broke through the noise of today’s meditation app market and became the first one to hit a $1 billion valuation. Ironically, apps like Calm sought out to improve mindfulness as a response to the negative effects of screen time. For $60 a year, or a one-time payment of $300 for life, Calm provides users with a range of services, from Sleep Stories (A.K.A. adult bedtime stories, including one told by Matthew McConaughey) to thousands of meditation tutorials available via its app and website. It wasn’t the first of its kind when it came out in 2012, but so far Calm has established itself as the most highly valued. It’s raised $116 million since its Series B funding round wrapped up in February, and it’s hiring for a ton of positions, all based out of San Francisco. Calm is on the hunt for engineers and data scientists, administrative roles and recruiters, product managers, and sales representatives on the executive and non-executive levels. Aurora Aurora is what happens when three experts from the self-driving programs at Google, Tesla, and Uber come together to start a company aimed at developing the technology for fully autonomous cars. Since its inception in 2016, car manufacturers like Hyundai and Volkswagen have partnered with it and â€" more recently â€" Amazon became an investor, contributing to its unicorn status. Aurora has raised $620 million in only two funding rounds, $530 million of which came from the second round alone, notably led by Sequoia Capital. That didn’t just make it a unicorn â€" it made Aurora’s valuation twice that of any other 2019 unicorn, pushing its valuation past $2 billion. Needless to say, Aurora is growing its workforce quickly. There are more than 50 open positions in the Bay Area or Pittsburgh, within seven departments: software engineering, hardware engineering, technical operations, strategy, partnership, product, and general and administrative (includes finance, IT, legal, and graphic design). Health Catalyst In February, digital health company Health Catalyst became the next startup to reach unicorn status. Its healthcare analytics apps help hospitals use the data they already to have in order to operate more efficiently, like the Data Operating System that provides AI-powered insights. It’s raised $377 million over the course of multiple rounds since 2008, and is hiring for jobs in Salt Lake City, UT and Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to engineer positions and a few executive-level openings, Health Catalyst is hiring interns as well as a senior writer for content marketing. TuSimple China-backed autonomous trucking company TuSimple is trying to commercialize self-driving trucks for long-distance trucking. Its trucks are making multiple fully autonomous trips a day on multiple different routes, with two “safety engineers” â€" one in the truck, one back at HQ. It plans on ramping up this year, and investors are here for it: The $95 million it brought in this February means it’s raised a total of $178 million since 2015, which puts TuSimple at a $1.09 billion valuation. The company is hiring a number of software engineers, a couple of hardware engineers, and both mechanical and electrical engineers â€" all of the elements needed to build a self-driving truck. But it’s also on the lookout for a number of professionals in research and development (including interns), as well as employees in its human resources, accounting, and product teams. Best of all, you get to do it from sunny San Diego, CA or Tucson, AZ. Chime Banking app Chime offers a service that its website calls “Banking the way it should be.” That means a no-fee debit card and features like helping you save small change akin to a piggy bank. And it’s FDIC-insured to give users the financial and mental security they need. Chime says its mobile-only bank has more than three million bank accounts, which is one million more than last summer â€" a 50% increase. It tripled its valuation in its latest funding round, making it worth $1.5 billion as of the first week of March. Chime’s user-friendly approach to banking means its hiring employees in a range of fields, including design and strategy (e.g. a Lending Credit Strategy Manager). They’re also looking for a number of product managers, recruiters, and growth specialists. All of Chime’s jobs are based out of San Francisco. Hims Known best by consumers for its candid ad campaigns about erectile dysfunction, Hims considers itself a “men’s wellness” company, creating men’s care products in five categories: Hair, Sex, Skin, Well-Being, Mouth. In November, founder and CEO Andrew Dudum launched a sister site, called Hers. The in-your-face marketing tactics seemed to catch investors’ attention pretty quickly. It launched in 2017 out of San Francisco, CA and in the year and a half since, Hims has raised nearly $200 million, more than half of which came from its January 2019 funding round that put it on the unicorn list. It’s the only direct-to-consumer product company in 2019’s unicorn class so far, and one of two to reach unicorn status as early as January. Unfortunately, the men’s wellness e-commerce company doesn’t seem to be hiring for any positions at this time. MONEY reached out for confirmation, but did not hear back at the time of publishing this article. This post has been updated from the original.

How to Control Anxiety Before a Job Interview

How to Control Anxiety Before a Job Interview The prospect of a job einstellungsgesprch brings up mixed feelings for fruchtwein people. On the one hand, getting an bewerbungsgesprch means you are one step closer to that next opportunity. On the other hand, you cant help feeling anxious about a stressful social situation that may bedrngnis even accurately predict your future job performance. Whether you like them or elend, job interviews will almost certainly be a part of your job search. Because they are inevitable, it is important to learn how to control your anxiety and fears before an interview. You may be surprised to learn that feeling anxious to before a job interview can enhance your performance. When youre experiencing manageable stress and anxiety levels, you will generally feel mora alert and motivated. Thats pretty much exactly how you want to feel at a job interview. The real problem is when anxiety turns into panic. Weve all experienced situations where weve been so anxio us we couldnt think clearly. Intense fear, panic attacks, and anxiety attacks also create some pretty unpleasant physical symptoms. Its embarrassing to walk into an interview with clammy palms, flushed cheeks, or shallow breathing, notlage to mention anxiety symptoms like a rapid heart rate and negative thoughts.Heres the good news. There are a variety of techniques that can help you master your relationship with anxiety and stress and ace your next interview. They fall into three broad categories 1) doing your homework, 2) changing your thinking, and 3) controlling your physical responses. Ill break them down below.Do Your HomeworkPeople experience more anxiety when they feel like a situation is out of their control. Job interviews can certainly feel this way. There are usually high stakes at play, and interviews force you to interact with strangers in an unfamiliar environment. If you have social anxiety disorder, this type of situation can trigger a stress responseeven a fight-or -flight response. But even if you dont have a social phobia, job interviews are not a staple of our day-to-day life, so they may feel unnatural and provoke anxious thoughts and responses.Sadly, it is unlikely that any of us will ever get to choose our interview location (or interviewer). However, preparing for an interview can help you regain a sense of control and reduce some of your stress and anxiety.Practice Your Answers to Common QuestionsWhile every interview is different, there are some questions you will almost always get asked. Some questions, such as Tell me about how you handled a mistake at work, can be particularly tricky. If you practice your answers to these questions, youll be less likely to get caught off guard. The STAR method is a particularly powerful way of answering behavioral interview questions. STAR stands for situation, task, action, and result. The idea is to focus on a specific situation you encountered, what you did about it, and the positive result. If y ouve never used the STAR method before, it helps to actually write out potential answers. This gives you a chance to reread and edit them.In addition to voreingestellt situation-based interview questions, interviewers will probably ask you some industry-specific questions. For example, when I was applying for therapy jobs, I would almost always be asked to analyze a clinical case study. If you are changing industries, you can use your network to get the inside scoop on what these questions are. Invest some time in preparing answers to these questions as well.Research the CompanySpend some time researching the company thats invited you for an interview. This will help you answer the inevitable, Why do you want to work here? question. It may also help you make some predictions about what your interview will be like. More information means less anxiety and anxious thoughts.Role PlayOne of the best ways to practice for an interview is to role play with a friend. The more you can get liv e practice before a stressful situation, the more predictable it will feel. And predictable situations are always less anxiety-provoking than completely novel ones. There are a few ways to maximize the value of a role-play exercise. First, pick a friend who wont be afraid to give you honest feedback about your responses. More importantly, revise the way you answer interview questions based on that feedbackSecond, make the role-play situation mimic your future interview situation as closely as possible. If you know youll be interviewed in a restaurant or caf, role play in a restaurant or caf. If youll be interviewed in a meeting room, check out a meeting room at the library. When I was interviewing for psychology internships, I knew my interviewers were not supposed to smile or give feedback. So, I asked my friends to behave exactly this way when we role played interview questions. Those role-plays were exactly as awkward as youre imagining them to be. However, practicing how I would behave in such a nerve-wracking situation helped me stay collected during the actual interview process. It can also be a good idea to play out worst-case scenarios, so you have a response ready and wont be caught off guard by a difficult question. Be prepared for questions that bring you out of your comfort zone.Adopt a Process-Oriented MindsetAdopting a process-oriented mindset is difficult, but its also potentially the best way to control your anxiety and fear surrounding job interviews. Process orientation is psychology-speak for being more focused on how youre doing something rather than the result. A process-oriented interviewee walks into the interview situation focused on learning about the company and improving their interview style. Sure, they want a job offer, but that is not where they direct their primary energy.Right now, you are probably screaming something like, But isnt the whole point of an interview to get a job?? Of course, interviews are ultimately about getting j obs. However, most people who go through a job search will have to cope with a lot of rejections. I learned this the hard way when I was applying for my first professional jobs after graduate school. After submitting over 50 job applications, I got a measly four interviewsand bombed two of them.If I had obsessed about every job I didnt get during that job search, I would have stopped applying entirely. Instead, I tried to use every application and interview as a learning experience. Pro tip dont ever say youre interested in a different position than the one for which youre being interviewed.I hope youll have to eat less humble pie during your job search than I did. However, if you are in a similar situation, learning how to learn from your mistakes is a pretty valuable skill. Focusing on ways to improve (rather than how youve failed) will help you power through the lows of job searchingand reduce anxiety for the next interview that rolls around. That may not start paying the bills i mmediately, but I promise it will pay off in the long run.Manage The Physical Symptoms of AnxietyEven if youve done your homework and adopted a process-oriented mindset, youll probably feel nervous the day of your interview. Physical anxiety symptoms (sweating, shaking, a racing heartbeat, a fight-or-flight response) can be really distracting and embarrassing in an interview situation. Thankfully, there are some simple techniques that can help you look poised and confident during the interview processso even if your mind is plagued by negative thoughts and worries, your interviewer wont know. The best part is you can do many of relaxation techniques without anyone else even noticing.Manage Your Breathingvideo demonstrates the technique. Most people will experience anxiety relief after practicing paced breathing for just a few minutes. However, paced breathing works best if youve practiced before youre in a situation where youre really nervous. My suggestion is to schedule about two minutes a day to practice. When its part of your day-to-day life, this skill becomes second nature when you really need it.Relax Your MusclesAnother way to quickly calm yourself and reduce your anxiety levels is progressive muscle relaxation (PMR). The idea here is to tense up and then relax each of your major muscle groups, working your way up your body. This is another skill that gets more effective the more you practice. Heres a video that walks you through a very brief PMR exercise. When you get skilled at PMR, its pretty easy to practice in public without anyone noticing. I sometimes tense and relax my toes and shoulders before as a way to reduce anxiety before getting into a stressful situation.Do a Brief Spurt of Physical ActivityIntense physical activity can also help you calm down quickly and improve your mental health overall. Now, this does not mean I am suggesting doing jumping jacks in the lobby before your interview. Thats probably *not* what you want your interviewer to remember about you. However, a brisk walk the morning before an interview can bring your anxiety down to manageable levels and relax your mind. This should go without saying, but please consult your doctor to make sure youre doing safe levels of exercise.Use Some Cold WaterIf youre feeling really anxious and need an immediate way to relax, activating the mammalian dive reflex can be effective. Heres how it works when your body believes youre drowning, it will decrease your heart rate to help you survive. Thankfully, you dont have to actually be drowning to benefit from this instinctual reflex. If you hold your breath and dunk your head in icy water for 30 seconds, youll experience the same effect. Obviously, bringing a bowl of ice water to your next interview probably wont land you your dream job. However, you can stimulate a milder version of this reflex by going into the bathroom and dabbing and some cold water right under your eyes. Ive tried and it and it really works. If you have a heart condition or eating disorder, please talk to your doctor before trying this out.Job interviews and the anxiety that often comes with them arent a whole lot of fun. However, once youve learned how to control anxiety, you can manage your fears so that you land that next amazing opportunity. The best part is that the relaxation techniques and skills Ive discussed in this article work for almost any stressful situation and can improve your mental health overall if you practice them repeatedly. So, once you get that job, you can use these skills to thrive and grow in your workplace too.__________________________________________________________________________________________Rebecca Fraynt has a PhD in Clinical Psychology and is an all-around healthcare nerd. How to Match Military Skills to Private Careers

How to Match Military Skills to Private Careers Theres an obvious challenge for veterans looking for work and the companies wanting to employ them matching military skill sets with civilian hiring needs from corporations who may not be willing to hire them in the first place. The employer and job hunter both need to identify the right crossover skills. Smart human resource professionals are going to find success by staying ahead of the trend and smart military job hunters are going to find careers by availing themselves of numerous government and career programs.Unemployment numbers overall are dropping, but younger veterans trail the general population. The jobless rate for veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time since September 2001a group referred to as Gulf War-era II veteransdeclined from 12.1 percent to 9.9 percent in November 2013 (the latest data available), the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The jobless rate for all veterans was 6.7 percent, a slight increase from November 2012.More recent veterans are going to be seeking work after the military. As reported in an article at the Society for Human Resource Management website, According to estimates from the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, approximately 300,000 active-duty personnel will leave the armed services in the next few years and seek to transition into private-sector jobs. One example of a corporate program for veterans comes from German automaker audi ag. It has launched the Veterans to Technicians program. It said the benefits are there for both employer (in tax benefits) and employee (with career training and resources). One example for employers is they can qualify for the Special Employer Incentives (SEI) program for eligible veterans who face extraordinary obstacles to obtaining employment. The program covers expenses incurred for cost of instruction , loss of production, and additional supplies and equipment. It enables employers to hire qualified veterans trained to their companys specifications at an apprenticeship wage, and delivers the necessary tools, equipment, uniforms and other supplies from the Veterans Administration. The Audi website also points out that as a result of the Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) to Hire Heroes Act of 2011, the U.S. Government extended and expanded this tax credit for veterans. Employers can receive up to $2,400 and $9,600 in tax credits by hiring veterans with certain disabilities and those unemployed for specified periods of time.Audi has also partnered with Snap-on tools, in one example of how employers can help veterans transition, to make the crossover into a career as an Audi technician easier. Audi and Snap-on Tools have partnered together to offer all hired participants in the Audi Veterans to Technicians program an incredible deal on a Snap-on tool package. The SHRM article also poi nted out, Although thousands of employers have pledged to hire more veterans and reservists as the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have wound down, the reality has oftentimes been disappointing. It quoted Bernie Hyland, manager of Audis program and a program manager for the Alexandria, Va.-based consulting group Calibre. He said, I believe employers who make these pledges have good intentions. Its just that many of the intentions were never followed up and many of the hiring efforts have fallen flat.Hyland added in the article that he sees an opportunity for human resources personnel who want to specialize in placing veterans into civilian careers. First, though, they have to overcome misconceptions about military personnel leaving the service. In a way, the mainstream media has created a stereotype that most veterans suffer from PTSD post-traumatic stress disorder and can be highly volatile and violent, he said in the article. But with the counseling now available, the number of vets who struggle with lingering problems or have violent tendencies is very low. Still, employers ask me all the time about the risks of hiring veterans. Some corporate recruiters have told me outright that the risks are just too high.Veterans looking to translate their skills to a civilian career are advised to head over to the Hero2Hired website. Its a program of the Yellow Ribbon Integration Program for military personnel and those who support them. The Hero2Hired website has a career assessment that could be a good tool for both recruiters and veterans. Career Profile of a Marine EOD Technician

Career Profile of a Marine EOD TechnicianCareer Profile of a Marine EOD TechnicianMarines in military occupational specialty (MOS) 2336, the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), probably have one of the most stressful careers possible. And thats saying a lot in a branch that prides itself as first to fight. Films like The Hurt Locker may have given the layman a basic idea of what an EOD Marine does. But to be specific, the Marine korporation MOS Manual states that EOD technicians work involves locating, accessing, identifying, rendering safe, neutralizing, and disposing of ordnance, including chemical or nuclear hazards, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and well, other things that go boom. In addition to deploying to foreign battlefields, EOD technicians may also find themselves coordinating with Federal or local agencies when a domestic threat presents itself. Its a high-stakes job where one wrong move could mean losing life or at least a limb. As a result, its one of the few mil itary careers that allows individuals to resign from the job if theyre burnt out. Marine Corps Order (MCO) 3571.2G, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Program, authorizes voluntary permanent removal from the MOS when the Marine makes such a request for personal reasons. Military Requirements Unlike most jobs, recruits cant enlist to join the EOD team out of high school. Only Marines who have at least reached the rank of corporal (E-4) can volunteer for duty, and even then, only the most qualified and motivated will survive the vetting process. Interested Marines begin by submitting themselves for screening (a good career planner should be able to help). Most of the time, Marines are screened in-person by senior EOD personnel to determine if theyre suitable to join the MOS. Ultimately, its a job interview, which means it takes a stellar Marine with the right attitude to make the cut, not just someone who meets the bare minimum requirements. But of course, there are bare minimums that ha ve to be taken into account. First of all, the prospective EOD Marine needs to be a US citizen. Any dual citizenship must be relinquished to qualify. Marines must also possess or qualify for a security clearance. On the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), a general technical score of 110 or higher is necessary. Most Marines will have already taken the test when they first enlisted, but if their scores werent up to snuff with their new EOD ambitions there are opportunities to re-take the exam. Here are some other basic requirements to be considered for the job Marines need to be at the top of their PT game with a first-class physical fitness test score.Claustrophobia is a disqualifier. Normal color imagination is a must.Any history of drug use (other than experimental use of cannabis before joining the Corps) renders a Marine not qualified to lateral move into the 2336 MOS, according to MCO 3571.2G. Education Ideally, training starts as soon as the Marine Corps gi ves an EOD applicant the green light. As soon as possible, qualified Marines are transferred to an EOD unit and begin learning on-the-job under the supervision of experts, until a seat opens up at formal training. Formal training takes place at the Naval School for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (NAVSCOLEOD) at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Dont let the name fool you NAVSCOLEOD is overseen by the Navy, but students and instructors hail from all four branches of the military, as well as some Department of Defense civilians. According to Eglins NAVSCOLEOD Fact Sheet, for Marines the school consists of 143 academic training days (not including weekends or holidays) and is broken down into 10 separate training divisions CORE, Demolition, Tools and Methods, Biological and Chemical, Ground Ordnance, Air Ordnance, Improvised Explosive Devices, Nuclear Ordnance, WMD and Underwater. Even after finishing school, continuing education is vital to EOD technicians. Every 2336 Marine has to be re-sc reened annually to make sure theyre receiving continued refresher training and maintaining their core competencies. Certifications EOD Marines may apply training and experience toward a journeyman apprenticeship as an ordnance artificer through the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program. And of course, Marines who complete EOD training and earn the MOS are qualified to wear the EOD badge on their uniforms to signify their intense training and commitment.
