Career Profile of a Marine EOD Technician

Career Profile of a Marine EOD TechnicianCareer Profile of a Marine EOD TechnicianMarines in military occupational specialty (MOS) 2336, the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), probably have one of the most stressful careers possible. And thats saying a lot in a branch that prides itself as first to fight. Films like The Hurt Locker may have given the layman a basic idea of what an EOD Marine does. But to be specific, the Marine korporation MOS Manual states that EOD technicians work involves locating, accessing, identifying, rendering safe, neutralizing, and disposing of ordnance, including chemical or nuclear hazards, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and well, other things that go boom. In addition to deploying to foreign battlefields, EOD technicians may also find themselves coordinating with Federal or local agencies when a domestic threat presents itself. Its a high-stakes job where one wrong move could mean losing life or at least a limb. As a result, its one of the few mil itary careers that allows individuals to resign from the job if theyre burnt out. Marine Corps Order (MCO) 3571.2G, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Program, authorizes voluntary permanent removal from the MOS when the Marine makes such a request for personal reasons. Military Requirements Unlike most jobs, recruits cant enlist to join the EOD team out of high school. Only Marines who have at least reached the rank of corporal (E-4) can volunteer for duty, and even then, only the most qualified and motivated will survive the vetting process. Interested Marines begin by submitting themselves for screening (a good career planner should be able to help). Most of the time, Marines are screened in-person by senior EOD personnel to determine if theyre suitable to join the MOS. Ultimately, its a job interview, which means it takes a stellar Marine with the right attitude to make the cut, not just someone who meets the bare minimum requirements. But of course, there are bare minimums that ha ve to be taken into account. First of all, the prospective EOD Marine needs to be a US citizen. Any dual citizenship must be relinquished to qualify. Marines must also possess or qualify for a security clearance. On the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), a general technical score of 110 or higher is necessary. Most Marines will have already taken the test when they first enlisted, but if their scores werent up to snuff with their new EOD ambitions there are opportunities to re-take the exam. Here are some other basic requirements to be considered for the job Marines need to be at the top of their PT game with a first-class physical fitness test score.Claustrophobia is a disqualifier. Normal color imagination is a must.Any history of drug use (other than experimental use of cannabis before joining the Corps) renders a Marine not qualified to lateral move into the 2336 MOS, according to MCO 3571.2G. Education Ideally, training starts as soon as the Marine Corps gi ves an EOD applicant the green light. As soon as possible, qualified Marines are transferred to an EOD unit and begin learning on-the-job under the supervision of experts, until a seat opens up at formal training. Formal training takes place at the Naval School for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (NAVSCOLEOD) at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Dont let the name fool you NAVSCOLEOD is overseen by the Navy, but students and instructors hail from all four branches of the military, as well as some Department of Defense civilians. According to Eglins NAVSCOLEOD Fact Sheet, for Marines the school consists of 143 academic training days (not including weekends or holidays) and is broken down into 10 separate training divisions CORE, Demolition, Tools and Methods, Biological and Chemical, Ground Ordnance, Air Ordnance, Improvised Explosive Devices, Nuclear Ordnance, WMD and Underwater. Even after finishing school, continuing education is vital to EOD technicians. Every 2336 Marine has to be re-sc reened annually to make sure theyre receiving continued refresher training and maintaining their core competencies. Certifications EOD Marines may apply training and experience toward a journeyman apprenticeship as an ordnance artificer through the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program. And of course, Marines who complete EOD training and earn the MOS are qualified to wear the EOD badge on their uniforms to signify their intense training and commitment.

Physical Fitness Standards for Air Force Basic Training

Physical Fitness Standards for Air Force Basic TrainingPhysical Fitness Standards for Air Force Basic TrainingThe Air Force advises you to get in shape before you report for Air Force Basic Military Training. You should work on your physical conditioning in advance so you will be prepared to pass the fitness standards required for entry and then to go through the physical conditioning and meet the physical training targets required for graduation. Suggested Fitness Level at Basic Training Arrival How fit should you be before you arrive? Men and women have different standards to achieve. Here are your targets that will best ensure your success in BMT Males 1.5-mile andrang in less than 1345 minutes, more than 25 push-ups in a minute, more than 35 sit-ups in a minute.Females 1.5-mile run in less than 1600 minutes, more than 15 push-ups in a minute, more than 30 sit-ups in a minute. The Air Force suggests training for the run by jogging at first at a slow pace for 15 to 20 minutes. As you build your fitness, work up to a level of doing a continuous 30 to 40 minute run three to five times per week. Fitness Standards Upon Arrival at AFBMT You will receive an anfangsbuchstabe assessment of your physical fitness (1.5-mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, and body composition) during zero-week of basic training. This assessment aids in identifying recruits who are in poor physical condition. Men must be able to complete the 1.5 miles run in 1830 and women must be able to complete it in 2135.Must meet body composition standards. The abdominal circumference of 39.0 inches for men and 35.5 inched for women. If not meeting this, body fat is estimated and the limits are 20% for men and 28% for women. If you dont meet these two standards, you may be immediately processed for entry-level separation as you are deemed not medically able to complete BMT.Results of this assessment designate a recruits physical fitness category. Privileges may be revoked if you show no signs of impr ovement.Recycle action may occur any time a recruit does not improve or fails to meet standards.Airmen on full PC waivers have the same restrictions as those who fail to improve. Not Meeting Physical Fitness Standards Consequences It is not advisable to show up at Air Force Basic Military Training out of shape, as recruits have only six weeks (including the in processing week) before they must be able to pass the standards.By far, failing to pass the physical fitness standards is the number one reason that most recruits inAir Force Basic Trainingget recycled. Recycle is a term that means taking a recruit out of their normal flight, and recycling them into a flight that is in an earlier week of training (usually two weeks). That means that the recycled recruit spends extra time inbasic training. Some recruits are recycled three and even four times for failing to meet the physical fitness standards before the commander finally gives up and initiatesadministrative discharge action. Physical Preparation During AFBMT While at basic, youll do physical conditioning (PC) six days per week. The six-day-a-week regimen includes three days of aerobic running and three days of muscular endurance training. The runs consist of 40-minute sessions of group-paced running, self-paced running, and six 30-second sprint interval runs separated by brisk walking. Each week, trainees are timed on a 1.5-mile run. The muscular endurance training takes up to 48 minutes on a circuit of crunches, leg lifts, push-ups, flutter kicks, and pull-ups. These are designed to improve upper body and abdominal strength quickly. During the entire period of basic training, recruits are individually timed on the 1.5-mile run once per week. Lack of improvement may require a reassessment of your fitness categoryImprovement may move you into a higher fitness categoryRecycle action is considered if you are more than a certain time over your allotted running time Graduation Requirements The final fitness test is conducted at the end of the 4th WOT/beginning of the 5th WOT (prior to Warrior Week). To pass, recruits must meet the following extremum physical fitness standards Males 1.5 mile Run - 1157Sit-Ups in one minute 42 for age 29 and under, 39 for age 30-39.Push-Ups in one minute 27 for age 29 and under, 27 for age 30-39.Abdominal Circumference 35 inches or less Females 1.5 Mile Run - 1426Sit-Ups in one minute 38 for age 29 and under, 29 for age 30-39.Push-Ups in one minute 18 for age 29 and under, 14 for age 30-39Abdominal Circumference 31.5 inches or less The push-ups and sit-ups must all be performed with proper form. If you come close but dont pass, you may be given another chance to pass the test the next day. Recruits who fail to meet the above standards can expect to be recycled for a minimum period of two weeks. Warhawk Physical Fitness Award Recruits who make the following minimum standards qualify for the Warhawk Award, which is the highest standard. Males 1.5 mile Run - 855Sit-Ups - 70 in one minutePush-Ups - 65 in one minutePull-Ups - 10 with no time limit Females 1.5 Mile Run - 1055Sit-Ups - 60 in one minutePush-Ups - 40 in one minutePull-Ups - 5 with no time limit Thunderbolt Physical Fitness Award Recruits who make the following minimum physical fitness standards qualify for Thunderbolt Award, or the Honor Graduate requirement. Applicant Tracking System Uncovered Qandidate

Applicant Tracking System Uncovered QandidateApplicant Tracking System Uncovered QandidateAnapplicant tracking ordnungsprinzip, or ATS, is a software application used to store, sort, and search through resumes. There are many applicant tracking systems out there, all with different features and functions. This post providesan in-depth review of one particularATS Qandidate.Launched by Wouter Goedhart, Tycho van Paassen, and Remy Verhoeven in 2013, Qandidate is now used by more than 6,000 companies worldwide, including Mattel, WeightWatchers, and KLM. Qandidate is based in Europe, with offices in Rotterdam and London. With 10 sample applications, we used Qandidate to do a test run of hiring for one job.Have youever received a rejection email immediately after applying for a job online? Read on to find out why that happens, along with what else we learned.Application processTo apply for a job with a company that uses Qandidate, you manually fill out fields asking for your name and contact information. While this might feel a bit tedious, its a better solution for candidates than applicant tracking systems that try to pluck contact information straight from resumes (which can lead to errors and omissions). The Qandidate.com homepage.Next, you answer any screening questions the company has chosen, paste your cover letter in the provided space, and upload your resume as an attachment. The space for the cover letter allows you to include links, making it the perfect opportunity to point the recruiter to, say, your online portfolio orGitHub account (GitHub is a code repository known for open source development. For developers, having a GitHub account showing numerous contributions can be almost as important as a resume). There is also the option to upload further attachments, such as writing samples or design work.Instead of submitting your resume as an attachment, you can elect to use your LinkedIn profile. Companies that use applicant tracking systems report that many c andidates start, but do bedrngnis finish, applications. Offering such shortcuts is one way to minimize this. The cover letter is front and center on a Qandidate profile. This is how your profile will look to a hiring manager if you dont submit a cover letter. This renommee capture also shows that this candidates answers to the screening questions were in line with the jobs requirements.Qandidate is based in Europe, and U.S. users might notice some minor differences when applying. When filling in your address, it asks for your postal code and your house or apartment number on one line, and your street on a standalone line. Each candidates profile contains space for a picture while its frowned upon in the U.S. to have your picture on your resume, its a voreingestellt practice elsewhere in the world. Dates are written in day/month/year format instead of month/day/year.Screening questionsUsed by 80 percent of recruiters on Qandidate, screening questions are a versatile tool. There are th ree different types of questionsInformative. For these questions, there is no right or wrong answer, and the question isnt counted at all toward how the system weighs the applicants.Normal. These questions are taken into consideration when weighing the applicants.Killer. A wrong answer to this type of question will automatically reject a candidate. Recruiters choose what constitutes a wrong answer (such as insufficient experience or education).Recruiters choose the number of questions they want to use, if any. For each individual question, the recruiterdecides whether to classifyit as informative, normal, or killer. In addition to Qandidates predefined questions, recruiters can also create their own. The predefined questions include education level and experience level. For the education level, recruiters select from a checklist the range of education levels they will accept (equivalent American and European degrees are grouped together). For experience level, recruiters enter a minim um and maximum number of years of experience that they are looking for. Numbers with more than four digits can be entered inthese fields, meaning that recruiters can effectively ask for a minimum amount of experience without setting an upper limit. The education level options. Recruiters can choose more than one.The custom question options include open question number range multiple choice date range and closed question. Recruiters can also set a minimum number of screening questions that each applicant must answer correctly. If a candidate does not meet that minimum, their application will be automatically rejected after a 48-hour window.Once a job has been posted, the questions can no longer be changed. This enayas that all candidates are subjected to the same questions, and that all questions are weighted the same for all candidates. In this predefined screening question, recruiters specify the amount of experience theyre looking for.If you have ever applied for a job online and go tten an immediate rejection, it is likely that you answered a screening question with a response that fell outside the window of what an employer was looking for. (Screening questions do not come with a lie detector, so recruiters should verify answers by looking over the other information a candidate has supplied.)Search and filtersUnlike SmartRecruiters and many other applicant tracking systems, Qandidate stores applicants resumes as attachments in their original formats. There is no profile section that presents resume information in an identical format for each candidate. The benefit is that your resume information wont get garbled, but this also makes it imperative that your resume contains the right keystimmts. If your profile does not show up when the recruiter searches for their most-desired keywords, your application is likely to go unnoticed. For help with tailoring your resume to a specific job, visitJobscanfor a keyword analysis. Jobscan will rate how well your resume ma tches the job description, and provide suggestions for improvements. This image capture shows the results of a search for resumes that contain the word trained. The search tool is what allows recruiters to find candidates whose resumes contain particular keywords. But while a human might recognize slight variations on the same word, Qandidate does not. This is typical for an ATS.Qandidates search tool returned different results for bachelors, bachelors, and bachelor. Searches for manager and management also returned different results. This is another reason why its important to submit a cover letter- doing so gives you more chances to include potential keywords. In your application materials, make sure to use synonyms and different forms of writing things out. For example, instead of always using Adobe Creative Suite 6, write it as Adobe CS6 as well.Because Qandidate doesnt insert each candidates resume into a standard format, recruiters have to hunt through each profile individually to determine where a keyword showed up, and in what context. With this ATS, your resume format still matters. Make sure all of the information on your resume is relevant and easy to binnensee at a glance.Qandidate has a rating system that allows recruiters to rate all candidates on a scale from one to five stars.Qandidate also features several filters to help recruiters sift through applicants. Recruiters canuse filters to view applicants that meet certain criteria in numerouscategoriesRatingScore from screening questionsYears of experienceEducation levelLocationApplication source (online application, employee referral, etc.)This makes it easy for recruiters to look for candidates who meet their ideal requirements, such as living locally and possessing 7 or more years of experience. When moving a candidate along in the hiring process, whether thats rejecting them, offering an interview, or simply confirming receipt of their application, recruiters can choose to use Qandidates default email templates, or create their own.The default email template for offering a candidate an interview. Recruiters can also create custom templates.Applicants can be considered for more than one job with Qandidate. There is a feature called Talent Pool that lets recruiters match applicants to different roles open within a company, or add them to the companys general talent pool for consideration for future roles. For recruitersQandidate is free for all users no paid option exists. Though the system is fairly intuitive, there are various forms of customer support for those who want more guidance (live chat, webinars, and an online forum, among others). It is designed as an in-house recruiting tool, based on the premise that people who know an organization well will best be able to choose the right candidates.Qandidate offers recruiters guidance for posting to job boards- and discounts.Qandidate offers both a calendar tool and a one-stop shopping option for posting job vacancies online . By doing thisthrough Qandidate, recruiters can take advantage of discounts the site has negotiated with 22 different job boards. Some of these job boards are U.S-based, some are Europe-based, and some are global. Posts on these job boards are active for 14 to 60 days, depending on the board. The price range for individual job postings is from $254 to $2021 (prices converted from euros), again depending on the board. Additional discounts are offered to recruiters who post on more than one job board. Qandidate suggests the job boards most likely to lead to the best candidates, based on the success rate of similar job postings from other users, though recruiters can post wherever they wish.In addition to the standard corporate blog, Qandidate has what they call theirLabs blog. This is where developers talk about how they build their software, projects theyre working on, and the results of their RD efforts. If youre interested in the technical side of what Qandidate is doing, and what theyll be doing next, this is the place to look.Qandidates blog by and for developers.TakeawaysIf an online application asks questions, answer them honestly. Not doing so wastes your time and that of the recruiter.Remember that the questions could be for informative purposes only not every question is meant to weed out and reject candidates. On the other hand, be prepared to accept that you may not be considered for a job for which you felt qualified.Additional things we learned from trying QandidateMake sure you have two copies of your resume one flawlessly-formatted PDF, and one text file.Use a cover letter. This is displayed prominently on an applicants Qandidate profile. Besides, whether candidates submit cover letters may play a role in how a recruiter rates candidates.Include links. If you have a minimal web presence, job hunting should spur you to change that. Aportfolio, blog, or other site allows you to not just list where you have worked, but to show specifically what you can do. Have you built an app? Published an ebook? Helped launch a local film festival? Whatever youve done, make sure you are prepared to provide links that make you stand out when applying for jobs online.Submit relevantsamples. Doing so shows a willingness to go above and beyond, and gives you the chance to prove to recruiters that you are capable of actually doing the job.One other way to increase your chances of landing an interview is to test your resume with Jobscan before applying. Paste in your resume and the job description, and Jobscan will tell you how effectively you have targeted your resume for the job, plus suggest improvements you can make.

To make room for the new Recent Highlights, we reformatted her education section and presented the saatkorn information using half the space.Without those three accomplishment statements, her resume sounds dead. The old resume consisted entirely of job descriptions, which summarize what she did in her various legal-services jobs - unlike accomplishment statements, which describe how well she did them.Resume tip Delete the phrase responsible for from your resume because it sounds weak and passive to a hiring manager. Two Students Take Top Honors in Mars Medical Challenge

Two Students Take Top Honors in roter planet Medical Challenge Two Students Take Top Honors in Mars Medical Challenge Two Students Take Top Honors in Mars Medical Challenge April 7, 2017 Two pre-college students from the West Coast of the United States were recently selected as the winners of the Mars Medical Challenge - the latest in a series of Future Engineers competitions sponsored by the ASME Foundation with technical assistance provided by NASA. To take part in the Mars Medical Challenge, which welches the fifth Challenge offered through the program since its launch in 2014, students in grades K through 12 from across the U.S. were asked to create a digital 3D model of a medical or dental object that could be used by astronauts to maintain their physical health during a three-year mission to Mars. Devices could address a variety of space medical needs, including diagnostic, preventative, first aid, emergency, surgical or dental purposes.Nearly 750 students from 34 states submitted entries for the latest Challenge in either the Teen Category, for students aged 13 to 19, or the Junior Category, for students aged 5 to 12. The winner in the Teen Category was Lewis Greenstein, an 18-year-old student from Seattle, for his device, the Dual IV/Syringe Pump. The winner in the challenges Junior Category was Lauren Lee of Cupertino, Calif., for her entry, the Drug Lewis Greenstein of Seattle placed first in the Mars Medical Challenges Teen Category with his entry, the Dual IV/Syringe Pump. (Photo courtesy of NASA.)Delivery Device. As the winner of each category, each student will receive a trip to Houston where they will have the opportunity to tour NASAs Johnson Space Center. The device designed by Greenstein, a senior at Seattle Academy, is a pressure infuser that would ensure the flow of intravenous (IV) fluid in microgravity. Greensteins Dual IV/Syringe Pump, which was designed to employ materials that would already be found on a spacecra ft, features a compartment for an IV bag and another for a blood pressure cuff. As the blood pressure cuff is inflated, the force from the cuff causes the wall between the two compartments to slide, putting pressure against the IV bag and ensuring a steady flow of fluid in a gravity-free environment. The pump is also intended to dispense drugs that need to be administered slowly and precisely through as many as three separate syringes at a time.Lee, the 12-year-old winner of the Junior Category, designed a 3D printable spring-loaded syringe that astronauts could use to deliver injectable intramuscular drugs, such as epinephrine, during the three-year Mars voyage. The easy-to-use syringe even allows astronauts to self-administer medications, if necessary. Lee said her design was inspired by many different things, such as oral syringes and ballpoint pens. I started designing by sketching out my thoughts and ideas on paper. Then, I started learning new software programs. Lauren Lee of Cupertino, Calif., designed the Drug Delivery Device, which took the top prize in the Junior Category. (Photo courtesy of NASA.)Deanne Bell, the CEO and founder of Future Engineers, was impressed by the ingenuity and desire to learn that the students, especially Greenstein and Lee, demonstrated during this latest Challenge. It is inspiring to see these two students use 3D printing to innovate something truly unique in space travel, Bell said. This ongoing collaboration between the ASME Foundation and NASA catapults our youth into another realm of science and engineering expertise. I am happy that our platform continues to challenge students to dream big and think off-planet.For more information on the Future Engineers 3D Space Challenges, including the full list of Mars Medical Challenge finalists, visit www.FutureEngineers.org. Social Recruiting What It Is and How To Do It - Spark Hire

Social Recruiting What It Is and How To Do It - Spark HireSocial recruiting, like most things social media-related, has become increasingly popular and useful over the last few years. Social recruiting, by its simplest definition, is the use of social media by companies to recruit talented employees. Some point out that for true social recruiting to take place, a community has to form around a particular media source (a website, a blog, etc.)linking the term social to its broader meaning, rather than a social media tag. However, either interpretation of the term can be useful in your company recruiting strategies. At its most basic level, social media can be a great way to spread the word about your company news. This news can be anything from media hits for your company, to goalsyouveaccomplished, to (you guessed it) job openings. A Twitter or Facebook account is a great way to begin your social media strategies. You can expect some of your followers to be potential employees, but mo re importantly, you can expect the traffic on your social media outlets to be from colleagues and geschftlicher umgang contacts. While your social media hits might not reach recruits directly, colleagues may pass the news along to worthy candidates. To take this point a step further, the Social Recruiting Strategies Conference this past January (in which Spark Hire attended) hammered home the importance of your employees and their networks in your social recruiting strategies. Some of the top tweets from this years Social Recruiting Strategies Conference includeEveryone is a Brand Ambassador, Everyone is a RecruiterYou dont create your employment brand, your candidates and employees do.This means that your employees need to be involved in your social recruiting strategies. What kinds of social media do you use to implement your social recruiting strategies? Do you blog, tweet, or facebook? Give your (trusted) employees time and license to contribute to your social media strategy with relevant information, entertaining stories, and appropriate ties to current events and pop culture. This kind of social media presence helps entice top talent by showing them a window into your company culture. Candidates reason that if current employees are fulfilled in their jobs with your company, they might be too.The larger this community of social media contributors becomes, the closer you become to achieving the second kind of social recruiting I mentioned above. The larger your pool of social media contributors, the larger your community becomes. Your content will also potentially vary more wildly from strictly work-related topics. This is okay Think about your favorite blog or website will they have any problem at all recruiting top talent when they need employees? No wayWhat are your top social recruiting strategies?
